This guide will help you to Create, Monetize and Earn from Proxy websites in a few simple steps.

Domain & Hosting

Choosing a domain may seem like an easy thing to do for a proxy site, however, there are a few simple rules that must be followed.

• Choose a memorable name that children can tell their friends. For example, f0e.info is a lot harder to remember than shadowsurf.info.
• Try to avoid the word ‘proxy’ in the domain name as school/work filters are quick to block sites with certain words in the domain
• TLD (.info/.com etc..) is NOT important. Remember, you do not want to spend too much on setting up your proxy as the income will not come immediately.

To begin with I recommend using a shared proxy hosting. Selecting a proxy host is much more difficult than selecting a host for a regular site as proxy host servers come under a lot of strain and need careful management. Remember most normal popular hosts like hostmonster and dreamhost will not allow proxy sites.

Choosing a Proxy Script

There are the following scripts available - phproxy, Zelune, Glype & CGI. Almost all shared hosts will not allow CGI proxy so this can automatically be discounted. Glype is fairly new and has relatively few templates and add ons available. Therefore, I would recommend either phproxy or zelune. Usually, I would go for phproxy as it is much easier to add adverts on the proxified pages.

However, remember that CGI proxy allows users to access ALL sites and there are few CGI proxys out there, therefore, it may be a good idea to get a dedicated server with CGI proxy installed in the future.

Choosing a Template

The key to choosing a template is looking for one with good ad placement. After all, the main way to make money with proxys is with adverts. Look for a template which you think people may click on the ads by accident and therefore, earn you money.

Customizing your site

SEO

Choose some keywords for your proxy (preferably ones which are not too competitive) and make sure you add these into the text of your proxy. Remember to edit the META tags and titles.

Your main target audience will be children at school so think about what they will enter into google and optimize your site for those keywords. Do not try and target too many keywords as this will leave you in the lower pages of google for many keywords instead of on page 1/2 for a particular keyword.

I strongly advise that you research the keywords you are going to use to make sure they will drive traffic to your site. Do not try and muscle into a very competitive keyword or go for one which no one is competing for - instead look for one which you have a good chance of being able to get on the first page of Google for.

Banning China/Iran

You may want to block a certain country such as China whose advert click is worth less etc.. To do this you need to use the .htaccess file in your root folder of your webserver. Then visit blockacountry and select which country you want to block. Copy the code generated into your .htaccess file and save. This will block traffic from the entire country you selected.

Note: This may dramatically reduce your traffic as China/Iran is often a big traffic source for proxys as their internet is censored.

Template Optimizing

Firstly, remember to change the adsense id to your own in the template you download.

If you are using the Zelune proxy I strongly recommend you use the zelune proxy gateway script. This script allows you to add an extra page of adverts in before the user visits the site. Demo here - click on surf and see the gateway page. This script is developed my mmelen.

Other than the above changes, the only thing left to do is add adverts to your proxy.

Adding Adverts

Adsense will usually already be integrated on the main proxy page. However, to increase your earnings you will want to add adverts on the proxified pages as well. Remember, adsense is not allowed on proxified pages. You can find out about adding adverts on proxified pages here.

I strongly recommend you do not use pop up advertising as it is very irritating for users and they are unlikely to use your proxy site again when there are others out there without pop ups.

Traffic

The main aim for any site, but in particular proxy sites, is gaining traffic. This is very difficult in a competitive niche such as proxys but there are a few ways you can do this.

1. Try make your site different from the rest. Maybe opt for a custom design, install an SSL certificate etc..

2. A memorable domain is essential so that people can tell their friends.

3. Upload some videos to YouTube with links back to the proxy site. Maybe a video entitled ‘Unblocking the internet at school’ - A viral YouTube video can generate 1000’s of hits.

4. Use proxy newsletter services. I can strongly recommend addvertise.info - Check the DP forums for others.

5. Send out MySpace bulletins to people.

6. Advertise on proxy topsites

7. Submit your site to proxy directorys

8. Advertise on sites you know your target audience visit e.g. game sites

9. Setup a proxy network, linking your proxy sites together.

One of these methods alone will not work but combined you should be able to generate a solid amount of traffic. It is hard work but the rewards are worth it. Don’t expect to have to invest no money initially, expect to spend around $50 getting you proxy site off the ground and then a further $50 per month keeping the traffic up.

Other points to note

Once you have your first proxy site running you will probably want to open up a network. This will require a dedicated server (and lots of time) to run.

Remember, proxy sites are continually be blocked by filters so don’t hang on to one proxy for too long. Keep opening up new ones and redirect traffic from the old site to the new one so the regular visitors can remember the new URL.

The proxy business is highly competitive, don’t expect to succeed right away but do keep trying.
