phpProxy vs Zelune vs CGI

There have been many discussions about which proxy software is the best to use but they all seem to conflict with each other. I have used all 3 scripts and right now I am going to say that CGI is rubbish! It is slow, uses up lots of CPU and RAM resources and is basically a waste of time. To even consider runnning a CGI script you probably need to go for a dedicated server. Even on hosts that ‘allow proxy’s on shared hosting’ you will find that they will not tolerate CGI - too much CPU usage.
So…..CGI is a no-go; What about the other two?
Well PHPproxy is certainly the more popular version. It is free to download and has had lots of work done on it. There are tons of sites using it and there are more themes for it. For example, all the themes bar 2 on this site are for PHPproxy. However, PHP is also a bit of a resource hog and can slow down servers. A VPS is definitely recommended for PHPproxy.
Zelune on the other hand is a much less known option. It is rare to find on the net but a new site has come up - Zelune.net! At Zelune.net you can download the Zelune script totally free. Zelune proxy is light weight on a server and is definitely not a high resource user. Though I have only got 2 themes for Zelune currently available on the site, expect to see more. I am definitely getting behind the Zelune script so if you are thinking of opening a proxy or want to change the script on your site then Zelune.net is the place to visit.

No, most hosts will not allow proxys on shared hosting. However, if you want, I can host you for $7 per month.
Alternatively, you can get a dedicated server or VPS.
